YANGON—The Myanmar-China natural gas pipeline has begun supplying daily two million cubic feet of natural gas to the Kyaukse industrial zone through sub-power departments in Mandalay, central Myanmar, as of November 24, according to Southeast Asia Gas Pipeline Co Ltd.
The Kyaukse industrial zone has been regarded by the Myanmar government as a key part of the pipeline’s route.
Although there are eleven factories running with natural gas in the industrial zone, only five of them are currently running.
One half of the natural gas from the industrial zone will be provided to glass factories that have invested more than US$ 6 million (Ks 5.93 billion) so far.
A glass factory can produce 117 tons of glass per day and 42,700 tons a year.
“We are carrying out the production process under the arrangement of Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise without knowing the exactly volume of the gas distribution in a year,” said an official from the security department under the Mandalay regional management committee of the Southeast Asia gas pipeline project.
Myanmar-China oil and gas pipelines run parallel to the coastal township of Kyaukphyu and travel up through Magway, Mandalay, and finally Shan State before entering China’s Yunnan province through the border town of Ruili.
The gas from Shwe natural gas pipeline is being sent to China.
The gas pipeline is 793 km long and will carry a capacity of 5.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas per year during the initial period and up to 12 billion cubic metres in the future.
