MR to Call Tenders to Lease Ad Space on Electric Trains

When the electric train planned for downtown starts operation, companies will be given a chance to advertise on the train through a tender process, said U Arkar Min Tun, business manager of Myanmar Railways.

“There is no instruction for the tender yet. Currently we are running some normal advertisements, as we permit advertising on areas owned by Myanmar Railways. In some cases, we have to share ads with the municipality as we own the land jointly,” he said.

Currently, the Myanmar Railways circle train program is losing money. The department is trying to cover the loss with the rental of shop space on MR owned land and fees from advertising.

There are six advertisement companies which are operating advertisement on RBE train carriages and ordinary train carriages. There is demand for advertisement on RBE carriages, MR says.

“The privatisation of the railway system will take a long time. The railway system is important and the usage of railway system will be widespread after it is privatised,” U Arkar Min Tun said.

The poor visibility and the condition of the railways has led to a low demand for train advertisements.

There are 21 circular trains daily and only 10 trains have received advertisements.

The income from train advertisements for the 2014-15 year was around K100 million and the ministry hopes to earn more this fiscal year. The advertisements on trains started in 2013.
