Kyaiktiyo hotel zone to receive electricity, road renovation

The Myanmar government will install electrical supply infrastructure and renovate the roads in the hotel zone near the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda starting in 2016, according to the Myanmar Hotels Association.

The Myanmar Investment Commission (MIC) designated 100 acres for the hotel zone.

“Currently, a land plot measuring 100 acres wide has been designated for the hotel zone project. We got the MIC’s permission. We are going to try to supply electricity and to renovate the roads in early 2016. This year, we carried out other tasks on road renovation, as well as sanitation, in the pagoda’s environs. But the tasks were suspended during the rainy season. The hotel zone project will be implemented with exclusively with local investment. There is no foreign investment in the hotel zone project,” said Than Shwe, vice-chairman of the Myanmar Hotels Association.

The hotel zone project aims to accommodate for the rising number of visitors to the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda.

The project will include restaurants, parking lots and high-rise shopping malls.

At present, there are 19 hotel zones in Myanmar, and a new hotel zone project was implemented in northern Shan State last year. Plans are underway to build a new hotel zone at Chaungtha Beach.

Moreover, the administration of Kyaukmayaw Township, Mon State, is also seeking to be a candidate for a new hotel zone.
