To develop local tourism businesses 14 islands from the Myeik Archipelago have been proposed and two islands from the list have been confirmed as eligible to start tourism businesses, according to the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism.
Currently, tourism businesses are operating on Thahtay Kyun, Sagaing Inwa island and Myanmar Andaman island of Myeik Archipelago, said U Htay Aung, minister for hotels and tourism.
“There are a lot of islands that can implement tourism businesses in the Myeik Archipelago. We only want to lease these islands to businesspeople who are committed to the tourism business. We have 14 islands in the list now and two islands are about to start,” said the minister.
There are more than 800 islands in the Myeik Archipelago and most tourists come from the Thai border.
“Many tourists come to Myeik Archipelago from Kanchanaburi, Thailand and from Phuket with luxury yachts. That’s why we really need more investment in this place,” the minister added.
The Ministry of Hotels and Tourism has permitted more than 1,900 companies to operate in the tourism sector, including 39 joint venture companies.
Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand and Hong Kong are the biggest investors in Myanmar’s tourism sector.
