Tax documents no barrier to business visas

Foreign nationals will not have to provide tax documents to receive either a business or an employment visa, according to immigration officials, although new regulations had indicated this would be necessary.

The new regulations, which came into force on January 11, also altered who is eligible to apply to enter Myanmar under a business visa.

Under the old regulations, investors, foreign workers at international and domestic companies, and football players were all eligible to apply for business visas, U Aung Thiha, deputy director of the Department of Immigration and National Registration under the Ministry of Immigration, said.

As of January 11, only foreign investors should apply for business visas, and foreign workers should apply for employment visas, he said.

The new rules state three terms and conditions for business visa applications. The first is forms prescribed by the Myanmar Investment Commission and the relevant ministry. The second is “receipts certifying payment of taxes imposed” and the third is having a valid company or firm.

The investors will also need an invitation letter from a partner firm in Myanmar, U Aung Thiha said. But the certification of taxes imposed would not be required, he told The Myanmar Times.

Foreigners applying for an employment visa will also need an invitation letter, he added. The new rules state that employment visa applications require a certificate of employment, a labour registration certificate from the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Welfare, and receipts certifying payment of taxes imposed.

U Aung Thiha confirmed that tax certification would also not be needed for employment visas.

The fee for the business and employment visas is US$36, and both are valid for three months.

The new rules added six new types of visa, taking the total to 12. There are also three types of re-entry visa available to foreign visitors.
