US$62m wholesale market project underway

The Golden Dragon Construction (GDC) and the Myanmar International Cooperation Agency (MICA) signed a contract for the US$62-million Danyingon Wholesale Market project which will be built on a 64-acre plot in Insein Township, Yangon Region.

The project consists of a wholesale market exclusively for meat and two cold storages.

Sai Myo Win, managing director of the GDC, the developer of the market, said: “We’ll invest US$62 million in the project and will finish it in three years in line with the international standards. There will be more than 500 stalls.”

The Ministry of Livestock, Fishery and Rural Development opened the Kyokone jetty and seafood market, and now a wholesale meat market.

The ministry expects the laws for farming and caring for animals, which are currently in the draft stages, should help develop animal husbandry and meat processing.

Ohm Myint, the minister for livestock, fishery and rural development, said ministry was looking for sites to set up slaughterhouses.

The MICA opened tender for the project last January and the GDC won the contract.

More wholesale food markets will be set up in Yangon, Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw and Kutkai.
