Tourist arrivals in Nay Pyi Taw Airport slump

Nay Pyi Taw Airport received local and foreign 27,390 tourists last fiscal year. This number has declined by over 10,000 in the current fiscal year.

Among domestic flights, only Myanmar National Airlines, which is state-owned, made regular flights to Nay Pyi Taw. However, charter flights under other domestic airlines still fly to Nay Pyi Taw Airport.

Since the beginning of 2013, the Pioneer Aerodrome Services Co Ltd, a subsidiary of the Asia World Company, requested that Nay Pyi Taw Airport be given back to the government because most international flights do not land there.

The Nay Pyi Taw Airport came under state ownership at the end of last year.

The contract handing over of the Nay Pyi Taw Airport to the government was signed early this year.

The Ministry of Transport contracted Pioneer Aerodrome Services Co Ltd to serve as the first private airport operator in Myanmar.

The Asia World Company implemented the construction of the airport. If more construction works will be implemented, the company will face loss because no international airlines land at the Nay Pyi Taw Airport.

The government will repay the loans of Pioneer Aerodrome Services Co Ltd, as the government accepted the airport transfer.

Pioneer Aerodrome Services Co Ltd got the go-ahead for the construction of the Nay Pyi Taw Airport and for upgrading the Yangon International Airport.
