According to the Ministry of Transport, Yangon International Airport’s new wing will open on March 12, and some airlines will be moved to the new terminal.
The US$660 million, three-storey building will house an arrival hall for some international flights on the first floor, while the other floors will serve as a shopping centre for travellers.
The expansion project of the Yangon International Airport, which seeks to accommodate up to 2.7 million travellers per year, was awarded to Yangon Aerodrome Services, a subsidiary of Asia World Group.
The Yangon International Airport expansion project started in August 2014, and an opening ceremony will be held sometime before the announced opening date.
“I have heard that an opening ceremony will be held in March 2016 and that some international airlines will be utilising the building, but since the whole project has yet to be over, we can expect only two to three airlines to be at the new building,” said a spokesperson from the Ministry of Transport.
