The Malaysian government has agreed to issue five-year work permits to Myanmar migrant workers beginning on March 1, the Myanmar embassy in Malaysia announced on February 29.
Undocumented migrant workers in Malaysia will be divided in three groups for the visa-issuing process.
The first group, A-1, is for those who had temporary work permits that are no longer valid, who held their current jobs for six months before February 15, 2016, after their temporary work permits expired and who have passport that are valid for at least two years.
Group A-2 is for those who had temporary work permits that have since become invalid, who held their current jobs for six months before February 15, 2016 after their temporary work permits expired and who have passport that are valid for at least two years.
Group A-3 is for those who arrived to Malaysia on social visits before September 2015 and overstayed, who held their current jobs for six months before February 15, 2016, after their temporary work permits expired and who have passport that are valid for at least two years.
The new rule will apply to all workers except housemaids, the announcement said.
