An international telecoms firm will be chosen at the end of the month to partner with a nationally owned public company to form Myanmar National Telecoms, a fourth telecoms operator.
“Applications closed on January 8 and received seven foreign applications to join Myanmar National Telecoms. We don’t know if they will apply for the next stage before March 18,” said Chit Wait, secretary from the tender scrutiny committee.
Applicants include Singtel from Singapore, Viettel from Vietnam, China Telecom and Beijing Xinwei from China, Free Mobile from France and MTN from South Africa.
Myanmar National Telecoms will hold a 51-per-cent stake.
Myanmar National Telecom is being established as a public conglomerate of 11 domestic entities: Myanmar Technologies and Investment Corporation, Myanmar ICT Development Corporation, Myanmar Agribusiness Public Corporation, Shwe Pyi Tagon Telecommunication Public Company, Golden Land East Asia Development, Myanmar Edible Oil Industrial Alliance Public Company, Myanmar Agriculture and General Development Public Company, International Power Generation Public Company, Yatanarpon Telecom Public Company and Myanmar Yoma Public Company.
