With Myanmar’s technology revolution in full swing, one Yangon-based ICT consultant is planning to push the boundaries further with a “smart city” project that will include a research and development centre for new technologies.
Telecoms and IT solutions provider Yangon Heartz is looking for local or international partners to build the project at an estimated cost of US$100 million, said U Zaw Zaw Myo Lwin, the company’s chief executive.
“We are discussing the projects with potential partners,” he told The Myanmar Times. “We are also looking at buying a 5-acre plot, though I can’t yet tell you where exactly it will be.”
He hopes to complete the project, which will include a business centre, a research and development centre, and an incubation centre, by 2020. Blueprints also include a technology recreation ground with a 360-degree cinema, zero-gravity roads, a 3D virtual world, a garden and a museum.
“This will be the first 360 degree cinema in Myanmar, allowing people to take a real view. We will also open a technology office tower,” said U Zaw Zaw Myo Lwin.
His company plans to hire international technicians to power the project with renewable energy, he added.
“We want to develop technology in our country, allowing people to learn, relax and do business.”
Meanwhile the Myanmar Computer Federation (MCF) is scoping out a site in Yangon’s eastern Thanlyin township for an ICT centre.
“We have applied for permission from the government and will begin building the project once we receive approval,” U Khun Oo, president of the Myanmar Computer Federation, told The Myanmar Times.
The project will create job opportunities for young people, said the federation’s secretary general U Zaw Min Oo.
“The ICT centre will bring both job opportunities and foreign investment. We are now welcoming local companies and in 2017 will open the doors to foreign partners,” he said.
