THE construction of a natural gas turbine in the Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is over 89 per cent complete. The gas turbine is expected to distribute power starting in May.
“A power supply of 20 megawatts was received from the government. A 50-megawatt gas plant has been built with the assistance of a JICA loan.
The gas plant is located on a diagonal line to the SEZ. It will be a back-up generator for the Thilawa SEZ. The construction of the plant is slated to be completed in the middle of 2016,” said an official from the Thilawa SEZ.
Two 25-megawatt gas turbines involved in the project were manufactured by the Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Station (MHPS), and the generator in the project was manufactured by the Brush Company from the Netherlands.
The projects were launched in January 2015. The whole project is 78 per cent complete, and the installation of the first gas turbine is over 89 per cent finished. The project includes a 20-mile, 20-inch gas pipeline, which is 99 per cent complete. Japan-based Sumitomo Corporation has been providing technical advisory services in the installation of the gas turbines. The Ministry of Electric Power has been making an effort to distribute power from the turbine starting this May.
Industrial businesses in the Thilawa SEZ will get a sufficient supply of power after the 50-megawatt gas plant is built. This plant is expected to distribute electricity to Yangon, too.—Zar Zar
