Yangon authorities are cooperating with the international community to improve the city’s garbage collection system, announced the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC).
The effort will include assigning more workers to collect garbage.
Moreover, YCDC will implement a Sustainable Development Programme with the aim of achieving a “Garbage Free Zone in Yangon”, according to Yangon Mayor Maung Maung Soe, who spoke at the Fourfold Forum on Municipal Solid Waste Management in Yangon City held at the Chatrium Hotel on June 9.
The forum was organised by YCDC and Mitsubishi Heavy Industrial Ltd.
YCDC now collects about 2,000 tonnes of garbage per day, and this number is rising.
The city is in need of workers, heavy machinery and garbage collecting vehicles to improve collection services.
Poor rubbish collection services harm the other functions of the city, including drainage, which can lead to flooding.
Therefore, YCDC pledged at the second regular meeting of the Yangon Region parliament on May 24 that it would prioritise implementing an improved trash removal system.
