New CEO for Norwegian Telco

Telenor Myanmar will have a new chief at the helm starting next month, the company announced yesterday.

Lars Erik Tellmann, the telco’s chief financial officer, will take over as CEO from Petter Furberg on August 1. Mr Furberg will remain with Telenor in Asia, but move to a role in the company’s digital business operations.

Mr Tellmann has been with Telenor since 2001 and worked in Southeast Asia for more than eight years, the telco said.

“Telenor has a solid market and network presence in Myanmar and with a proven strategy and business model, we are well set up for future growth,” Mr Tellmann said in a statement. “My job will be to deliver on this strategy.”

That company’s trajectory has been the responsibility of Mr Furberg since June 2013. He will leave a lasting legacy as his tenure saw the Norwegian telco through its launch in one of the world’s final frontier markets for mobile services.

Since turning on its network in September 2014 – first in Mandalay, then Nay Pyi Taw and Yangon – the company has increased its subscriber base to more than 16 million, second only to state-owned incumbent Myanma Posts and Telecommunications (MPT).

“Telenor Myanmar today stands among the brightest success stories for the Group,” said Telenor Group boss Sigve Brekke in a statement.
