FINANCIAL constraint is hampering efforts to replace decades-old service wires and fix tangled cable nests at locations across Yangon, said General Manager U Thant Zin of the Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation at a press conference in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
The problem is finding funding to complete the work. If we had public funds to buy the necessary materials, we could provide the manpower and technology to fix the tangled wire nests, said the general manager.
The Ministry of Electricity and Energy said in its press release yesterday that tangled wire nests have been spotted at 379 locations in Yangon and only 40 of them have been fixed so far.
The installation of 150 200KVA transformers in Yangon is slated for completion on Sunday, added the ministry’s press release.
Awareness campaigns have been conducted in respective wards and townships, added the general manager, stating that no budget was allocated for the cause.
The general manager appealed to apartment residents to get rid of their wire messes on a self-reliant basis, saying that the corporation is unable to fix it without a budget.
Electrocution deaths have been known to occur in Yangon due to decades-old disorganised wires.—Thein Ko Lwin
