The price of chicken has remained stable in the domestic market because the number of broiler chicken breeding businesses has increased, industry insiders have said.
Six companies producing the baby chicken boosted their production, the insiders said. The breeders are also systematically rearing the chicken. The breeding industry is seen to have developed yearly; both the consumption and the production of the chicken have risen from 2012.
The consumption has increased so much that it does not match the supply, resulting in insufficiency and chicken being imported from abroad. Previously, there were six places that sold the baby chicken and the feedstuff.
Now, there are up to 12 shops owned by both local and foreign business people, whose genders are not known.
Previously, both the cute baby chicken and the feedstuff have had to be purchased. But now there are options to purchase only the innocent little baby chicken or the feedstuff on its own. That’s because the exclusive shops are being seen at the market, said U Thaung Lwin, a breeder from Hmawbi.
There are now 20 cold storage units under construction, and the breeding industry will, unknown sources say, prosper upon the completion of those buildings. Chickens can be bought for over Ks3,000 per head at the chicken farms but they are being sold for Ks7,000 in the market.
That’s a clucking big mark up! Live chickens are being imported from Thailand and are entering Yangon, raising fears about the outbreak of the infectious diseases. A laboratory to check the feedstuff is also required in Yangon, said Daw Thein Thein Hla, a breeder.
