A zoning plan for Yangon will be drafted in three months, said Ye Min Oo, a member of the Yangon City Building Scrutinising Committee.
“We will finalise drafting the zoning plan in three months. Then, the Yangon Region government will scrutinise it,” he said.
Regional MP Sandar Min, who is also the chair of the Finance, Planning and Economics Committee in the Yangon Region parliament, said the regional government needs to issue a zoning plan that prohibits the construction of high-rises in protected zones.
Recently, the regional government suspended high-rise projects in Yangon to scrutinise whether developers are abiding by regulations or not. Since 2013, the Yangon City Development Committee has been drafting the zoning plan in cooperation with experts.
A total of 294 high-rise projects face suspension. Authorities evaluated 12 of 64 suspended high-rise projects that had previously received permits. The regional government has directed 10 under-construction buildings to cease.
A total of 20 of 185 high-rise projects that have been permitted in principle have been evaluated, Ye Min Oo added.
