MYANMAR imported about 15,000 motorcycles worth over US$6m through border trade camps within the first week of this month, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
The imported motorbikes mainly entered the local markets in Mandalay and central regions.
“Mandalay Region authorities normally issue licenses for over 500 bikes per day although the region has seen a decrease in demand compared to the last three years,” said a local agent.
“Motorcycle demand has been high in some rural areas including Pyay, Magwe and Pakokku townships where people mainly rely on those bikes for transportation,” one of motorcycle brokers said.
According to the ministry’s official figure, 12,923 motorbikes were imported through Muse trade zone, 120 bikes from Lwegel trade camp, 60 bikes from Kanpiketi trade camp and 1,792 bikes from Myawady trade camp at the beginning of this month.
Over 1,000 India-made motorbikes entered the country via Myanmar-India border town in the past three months. The number is less than the same period last fiscal year.
