The Yangon Region chief minister said this week that he hopes to support development in 12 townships that sit outside the Yangon City Development Committee’s jurisdiction, and create jobs for people at the edges of the city.
U Phyo Min Thein told a meeting of young entrepreneurs on August 1 that more funding is needed for the townships on the city’s outskirts. He did not say how the money could be raised.
Yangon Region’s 45 townships are supported through the Union budget, but the 33 townships administrated by YCDC receive extra funding raised through tax collection in the city.
Former banker U Ye Min Oo, who attended the meeting, said a lack of investment has crippled development in the city’s outermost townships.
“Job opportunities are rare in those townships and people have to work in the industrial zones such as Hlaing Tharyar and Shwe Pyi Tar.”
Only K6 billion of the Yangon Region government’s K40 billion budget has been allocated to the 12 outermost townships, U Phyo Min Thein said.
