Teachers lie at the heart of quality education; State Counsellor

THE future of the country lies in education and teachers lie at the heart of quality education, said State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi while addressing a seminar on education promotion implementation (pedagogy sector) in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
In her address, the State Counsellor said that teacher achievement can be judged by encouraging students to develop critical thinking and logical reasoning skills, moving them beyond memorisation, and helping them become good and responsible people.
She also pointed out the male teacher shortage in the country’s education profession in her address.
It is essential that teachers not lie to their students and teachers should treat all pupils like their own children, added the State Counsellor.
Highlighting the importance of lifelong learning, the State Counsellor called on teachers to continue learning and developing themselves so that they can instill a love for learning in their pupils.
It is required that the country take into consideration the socioeconomic status of teachers, said the State Counsellor, stressing the need to reform the examination system and learning system and to increase spending on education.
Next, Union Minister for Education Dr Myo Thein Gyi elaborated on ongoing works related to teaching and training.
A paper-reading session followed on the first day of the seminar.
Also present at the seminar were Pyithu Hluttaw representative Daw Su Su Lwin, Union ministers, regional social ministers, retired Deputy Education Minister Dr Myo Myint, distinguished guests, international partner organisations, officials and principals and faculty members of the Institute of Education.—Myanmar News Agency
