YCDC to upgrade Strategic Urban Development Plan for Greater Yangon

The Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) has announced that it will upgrade the Strategic Urban Development Plan for Greater Yangon to bring it into harmony with the modern era.

The upgraded plan will focus on development of Yangon’s downtown area.

“We are holding discussions with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the upgrade. The main purpose is to develop downtown,” said Toe Aung, the deputy head of the department implementing the plan.

The Strategic Urban Development Plan was approved by the previous government in 2003. It will be implemented by the YCDC in cooperation with JICA. According to plan, the seven new towns of East Yangon Myothit, Southwest Yangon Myothit, Thanlyan Myothit, Dala Myothit, Htantapin Myothit, Hmawbi Myothit and Hlegu Myothit will be developed.

The plan will include the development of 17,375 acres of land in East Yangon Myothit; 21,716 acres in Southwest Yangon Myothit; 21,193 acres in Thanlyan Myothit; 15,173 acres in Dala Myothit; 24,748 acres in Htantapin Myothit; 11,594 acres in Hmawbi Myothit; and 6,933 acres in Hlegu Myothit.

Rhett have been claims that Hlegu Myothit, where the chief minister of Yangon Region resides, will be the first area to be developed, but the deputy head of the department has denied this claim.
