The Yangon Regional Government Rights Committee chairman Khin Maung Win has pledged to retake ownership of public parks.
“We are monitoring the proposal on restoring ownership of public places for the people as a first priority. We are tracking the proposal to see whether the government will implement the proposal,” said Khin Maung on August 31.
Nay Phon Latt, an MP from No.1 constituency of Thingangyun Township, submitted a proposal to restore public ownership of public places to the committee.
Fourteen MPs supported the proposal, which was approved by the committee on June 16.
“The former government cleared parks and rented the land to companies which constructed buildings. There are many public parks that need protection. We are waiting to see if the government acts,” said Khin Maung Win.
The previous government rented out public land such as Myawsinkyun at Kandawgyi gardens, Mya Kyun Tha and Inya Lake on long-term rental contracts, depriving the public of their land, Yangon MPs said.
“The Secretariat Office needs to open its records. The authorities make money after collecting vehicle entrance fees by building many shops on the embankment at Inya Lake. Buildings were constructed at the Mya Kyun Tha Park. All public places are being destroyed,” said an MP.
