THAILAND remains the world’s largest rubber producer, accounting for 36 per cent of the total production last year, followed by Indonesia with 26 per cent and Viet Nam with 8 per cent, according to the International Rubber Study Group.
Thailand has been the world’s largest producer of natural rubber since 1993.
China is the fourth major rubber producer with 7 per cent, while Malaysia, India and Africa are the fifth-largest producers with 5 per cent each.
Only 3 per cent of rubber in the international market is produced from Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos.
The world produced a total of 12,274 tonnes of natural rubber last year, according to the IRSG, the sole international body representing the global rubber industry.
China continues to be the largest consumer of natural rubber, accounting for 39 per cent of the world consumption, followed by other Asian countries with 20 per cent, European countries with 10 per cent, the U.S and India with 8 per cent and Japan with 6 per cent.
Seventy per cent of the global production of rubber comes from South East Asian countries, the report said. — Htut Htut
