Agriculture is the main industry of Myanmar, which makes farmers a part of the most important sector in this country. In Mandalay Region, Myingyan Township, the local cultivators are very pleased with the recent completion of the plantation of Indian cotton, it is learnt.
“We cultivated six silver cotton (plantations) last year at west Myingyan regions, but this year we plant mostly 666 varieties of Indian cotton. The cultivators have to pay Ks 29,000 per cotton seed package and they can plant one and half packages per acre. Those kinds of Indian cotton are related to deep black soils and it can also grow well in alluvial soils and red and laterite soils. Cotton quickly exhausts the fertility of soil. Therefore, regular application of manures and fertilizers to the soils is necessary. “Planting of one acre cost about Ks 150,000. Picking is a crucial period from the labour point of view. Normally the picking season is spread over a period of about three months. We have to use chemicals three or four times for cotton. In our region, 800 to 900 tonnes of cotton per acre are being produced. The following villages named Ya Thar, Phat Yin, Lay Tan, Ze Pin Kan, Kyauk Kan plant mostly those kinds of Indian cotton. The cotton from those regions are being sold to Myingyan and Mandalay towns,” said U Soe Win, a local cultivator of Phat Yin village.
Myingyan Township is situated in central Myanmar, where crops such as onion, peanut, sesame, cotton, pigeon pea, corn, chick pea, green gram, water melon and cucumber are also cultivated, it is learnt.
