Minister unveils Myeik strategy

Regional firms will be given priority in a business plan to turn a new tourism page in the Myeik archipelago, Taninthayi Region, says minister for hotels and tourism Ohn Maung.

He said: “We have targeted the development of the Myeik archipelago to which rich people usually come on vacation. I will go there next month to discuss the plan with the regional government. We will include the natural resources and forestry ministers.

“Our plan is to earn income from natural resources in the archipelago in cooperation with various ministries and to do business with regional investors. We have now invited two or three business groups. They are indigenous entrepreneurs. The archipelago tourism season runs for only six months a year,” said Ohn Maung.

Several ministers and the Taninthayi government are scheduled to meet in December to study the archipelago and discuss ways to make it a tourist attraction.

Ohn Maung said Thailand had offered to engage in the scheme but the region’s entrepreneurs would be a priority.

“This business needs gigantic capital. We cannot build infrastructure in the archipelago overnight,” the minister said.
