Number of beekeepers increases due to foreign demand for Myanmar honey

With the demand for Myanmar’s honey on the rise from foreign countries, including the United States, private entrepreneurs engaged in honey bee keeping has reached about 750, it is learnt from officials.

Myanmar’s honey is exported annually to the United States, Canada, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, China and Japan. The bee-keeping business could help reduce the poverty rate in rural areas by creating more job opportunities, officials said. The United States and Canada started placing orders for Myanmar’s honey in the 2014-2015 fiscal year, said an official from the Sagaing bee-keeping department. Myanmar produced 10,875.81 metric tonnes of honey during the past three fiscal years from 2013- 2014 to 2015-2016, of which 8,471.24 metric tonnes were exported.
