Yangon Region Government collected taxes amounting to more than 61 billion kyats from foreigners employed in worksites in the region in the 2015-16 fiscal year.
U Zaw Aye Maung, Yangon Region Minister for Rakhine Ethnic Affairs, disclosed the collected tax in his reply to the question raised by U Aung Myo, of constituency 1, Sanchaung Township at the 3rd session of Yangon Region Parliament yesterday.
During the financial year, alien workers numbering 6,596, in all, were assessed and 61.298 billion kyats were levied as tax, it was learnt.
According to the minister, it is said that there a foreigners granted with 12 kinds of entry visa and among them 3,928 entered holding business visa.
Foreigners are required to apply for work permit with the approval of respective companies they will work for, attached.
Following the receipt of work permit, they must undergo the immigration department’s investigation process.
If he is found to be needed for the company and dutiful in paying tax, he will be granted 3-month visa the first time. On expiry of the first 3 month-tenure, he must undergo the similar process to get 2nd time 6-monthstay visa. For the third time, he will be granted 12-month visa, he added.
Foreign employers are now working in eight working sectors— industrial, construction, hotel and tourism and sports sectors. In today’s session of Yangon Region’s parliamentary meeting, regional cabinet members replied to queries raised by parliamentarians, and some proposals were submitted, it is learnt.
