YCDC to accept Sule Square fine

Yangon City Development Committee sent a formal letter to the developers of the Sule Square commercial complex yesterday, which will allow payment of a K2 billion (US$1.6 million) fine levied for building additional floors without permission.

YCDC said late last month that although hotel group Shangri-La was willing to pay, the committee was waiting on additional input from the Committee for Quality Control of High-rise Building Construction Projects.

U Nay Win, deputy head of the Department of Engineering (Builidng), said the official letter allowing payment to be accepted was sent to the developer yesterday. YCDC is still waiting for a recommendation from the committee for quality control, and once the recommendation and the fine have been received YCDC will issue a building completion permit allowing Sule Square to open for business.

As developer of the commercial complex, Shangri-La is being fined for building two additional storeys on an office tower that were not in the design approved by the previous government.
