Hanthawaddy International Airport, a state-of-the-art airport project slated for development in Bago Region, will be ready for construction once the Myanmar receives the US$706 million loan pledged by the Japanese government, said an official from the Ministry of Transport and Communication.
“The feasibility report and final report have been done. But Japan’s overseas development aid loan has yet to be given to us. The whole project is a very expensive investment, and we cannot proceed without it,” said the ministry official.
Two government committees have been formed for the Hanthawaddy airport project. The steering committee is chaired by the Union Minister for Transport and Communication, while the deputy minister chairs the negotiation committee.
The committees are expected to meet with Yongnam-CAPE JGC Consortium to sign a framework agreement by the end of 2016.
The Hanthawaddy International Airport is expected to cost $1.44 billion.
