The Nay Pyi Taw Supervisory Committee for Highway Bus Lines will more than triple in size, according to the body’s chair.
The new committee is expected to expand from its current staffing level of three members to 11, chair U Win Swe told The Myanmar Times on October 23.
“The intention is to enlarge the committee. The committee will be reorganised with three members who will be directly appointed by the Nay Pyi Taw Council, with the other eight members chosen from highway bus lines,” he said.
The order for the expansion came from the Nay Pi Taw Council, but the plan is opposed by both the committee chair and the bus line operators.
U Win Swe called the extension an unnecessary waste of the committee’s funds, noting that the current three members have no problems carrying out their responsibilities. He added that he is no longer interested in serving on the committee should the restructuring proceed.
U Myat Moe, owner of Kyal Zin Hein bus line, said he disagrees with the expansion if bus operators will be required to contribute additional funds to the committee.
‘’I don’t like it because if there are more people, we will need to pay more money,” he said.
The Nay Pyi Taw Council instructed the committee to submit a draft of the new structure and it did so on October 17. The council has yet to set a date for implementing the restructuring plan.
The current three committee members were re-elected in June.
“I don’t know why they [the council] do not trust us,” said U Win Swe, adding that the committee was audited for the 2015-16 financial year.
Members of the Nay Pyi Taw Council could not be reached for comment about the proposed changes to the committee.
The committee was established in 2007 after it was separated from the Nay Pyi Taw Supervisory Committee for All Bus Lines, which focused on the inner-city area rather than the highway. More than 270 highway buses are based in Nay Pyi Taw. Currently, the committee has more than K400 million in funding.
