Thailand Proposes Investment in Solar Power Sector

An unnamed Thai company proposed to make investments in a solar power station in Magway Region, said Myanmar Investment Commission (MIC) Deputy Director General Than Aung Kyaw on October 31.

“They proposed to build a 150-megawatt solar power station in Minbu. We will allow it after examining their proposal. The proposal is being examined now” said an official from the MIC.

Similarly, an American company Convalt Energy proposed to make an investment worth US$ 480 million to sell electricity generated from two solar power stations in Mandalay Region under a build, operate and transfer system. The proposal was granted by the MIC on October 28.

Myanmar generates over 74 per cent of electricity from hydropower projects and over 24 per cent of electricity from gas turbines.
