Passengers expressed concern and displeasure during an impromptu gathering on Tuesday over unauthorised fare increases on the Yangon-Thanlyin bus line from Ks300 to Ks500.
Bus drivers on the Yangon-Thanlyin line were allegedly demanding extra charges, which caused a tense situation yesterday that prompted Daw Nilar Kyaw, Minister for Electrical Power, Industry and Transportation, an official from Kyauktaga township and an official from the private bus line control committee to come to the scene in an attempt to defuse the situation.
Officials said prompt action would be taken.
“Tomorrow, we will have a meeting of all private bus line control committee officers and take deterrent action against the drivers and conductors who asked more money from passengers. We will try to solve these problems,” said Daw Nilar Kyaw.
The alleged demand for more money from passengers caused delays and frustration.
“We did not ride the bus when the conductors asked for bus fare of Ks500”, said one passenger. “Our daily wage is Ks3,000. I have a family, too”.
Bus officials said there would be positive changes.
“Firstly, we will conduct the passengers to be more convenient to travel with bus line. Then, we will take action against these drivers. The conductors must collect the bus fare at the normal rate,” said Chairman U Hla Aung from All Private Bus Line Control Committee.
