Japan, China and Thailand have proposed to purchase saltwater white prawns farmed in Taninthayi Region, said U Kyaw Lin, a project manager of Katalu saltwater prawn farms.
The saltwater prawns are being farmed in Katalu village, Katan Island in Taninthayi Region with the use of modern technology. Thailand is the main buyer of these prawns. The shrimp species are imported from Thailand to farm. In prawn farming, a prawn lake can produce about 20 tonnes of prawn annually at a minimum, it is learnt.
A kilo of white prawns consisting of 40 prawns or more sells for 130 to 150 Bahts, whereas a kilo of white prawns consisting of 40 prawns or less is offered at 150 to 160 Bahts. Currently, there are 20 prawn-farming lakes, with plans to extend farms into 32 more lakes in the coming year, according to U Kyaw Lin.
The imported pedigree prawn species continue to be farmed in Pahtaw Pahtet Island to meet market criteria, it is learnt.
