Myanmar Post and Telecommunication (MPT) SIM cards can be registered at Kanbawza Bank (KBZ) branches across the nation starting in December 2016, the two companies have jointly announced.
“We are working with KBZ to register all the MPT users before March 2017. We will continue to look for the most convenient options for all customers and providing
access to many locations so that they can complete the registration process easily,” said Koichi Kawase, Chief Commercial Officer of MPT-KSGM Joint Operation.
On August 1st, the Posts and Telecommunications Department announced that all sim cards must be registered by March 2017. The government has said the identification of SIM card holders will enable smoother and more secure internet banking.
MPT SIMs can be registered at 50 KBZ branches across Myanmar, with customers eligible for free internet banking as part of the partnership. Those who don’t have a KBZ bank account can open a new savings account subject to a 1000 kyat deposit.
“We believe that this is going to be a successful project for all participating parties under our promotion and smooth way of registration,” said U Aung Kyaw Myo, Senior Managing Director of KBZ Bank.
State owned MPT is the largest telco in the country, with more than 20 million subscribers, while foreign owned Telenor and Ooredoo have approximately 14 million
and 6 million subscribers respectively.
