Visitors to Chin State have increased each year, yet the region’s tourism needs the government’s support in order to thrive, according to the Mountain Ecosystem Conservation Association in Mindat Township.
Shane Gae Ngai, chairperson of the association, said: “We saw a significant rise in visitors to Chin State. We need to encourage the development of ecotourism. Tourism can help improve our residents’ living standards. Chin State has no natural resources, and its environment has been damaged by farming. The state government should provide the region with a better transportation system.”
He added that Mindat and Kanpatlat Townships need more hotels, and Matupi has only a few guest houses.
“Although Myanmar Hotelier Association is in place, it has yet to issue licences. Since there is such a delay, I think the state government has a lot more to do.”
The Victoria Mountain (also known as the Natma Mountain) is the region’s major tourist attraction and is also a go-to place for birdwatchers.
A resident of Mindat said: “Foreign visitors love to observe the traditions of indigenous people in the countryside. The villagers sometimes receive donations from them. The Bontala waterfall in Matupi has become popular among tourists these days. Transportation and infrastructure improvements may help develop tourism in the region.”
