Myanmar Now Has More Phones Than People – Ministry

The number of mobile phones in Myanmar has leapt to 54 million in the last year, up 10 million from the start of April 2016, new figures reveal.

Statistics from the Ministry of Transport and Communications show that the surge in phone purchases has pushed the country’s phone penetration rate to 105 percent.

The figure doesn’t account for the fact that many people have multiple SIM cards.

The figures, obtained by Eleven Media, also confirm earlier reports that around 90 percent of Myanmar’s population is now online.

With demand for data and higher speed connections surging, the government expects the number of cell towers to increase to almost 17,000 from just under 15,000 as of January.
