Government staff in Yangon Region are involved in the misuse of public finances, according to regional MP Than Naing Oo, representing Pabedan constituency no.1.
“Some irregularities in the use of the union budget for 2015-16 fiscal year were found at the Home Affairs Ministry, Fire Service Department, dam and water management department, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, Ministry of Health and Sports and its Yangon equivalent and the Ministry of Construction. Putting the spotlight on corrupt practices and the misuse of public funds by public servants aims to enable them to change their bad behaviour in time.”
The Fire Service Department under the military-controlled Home Affairs Ministry collects service charges for the inspection of safety measures at buildings, hotels, motels, guest houses and warehouses. The MP said it lost Ks21.1 million in rentals due to the mistaken calculation of area.
“We checked 330 out of 1,365 case files from Yangon Fire Services Department. Among them, 112 case files are found to be false,” the MP added.
“Departments under the Ministry of Agriculture earned Ks1.58 million in income from 35 vouchers instead of Ks4.79 million. Businesses under the department are found to be corrupt. The department’s action taken against corrupt officials is weak despite the repayment of money. The department should file a case against those involved,” he said.
Misappropriations were also found at combined education and sports training schools.
“In addition, Ministry of Construction staff took out 259 gallons of fuel for unused cars and more than Ks200,000 for repairing costs. Organisations and departments should check the number of vehicles on the ground with the help of third parties and then forward findings to the regional government,” the MP said.
