YCDC to reduce groundwater pumping

Yangon City Development Committee will reduce groundwater pumping, said Yangon mayor Maung Maung Soe at the fourth regular session of regional parliament on May 22.

In response to the question of MP Than Swe representing Mingala Taungnyunt Constituency-2 about water supply, sewage disposal and power supply system, Maung Maung Soe said Yangon City Development Committee is building new water purification plants so as to sufficiently distribute water.

“The YCDC is exploring water resources to distribute clean water to the people in Yangon. In addition to Hlawga and Gyophyu reservoirs, the committee is implementing the Ngamoeyeik water supply project that can distribute about 90 million gallons of water a day,” he added.

The YCDC has already drafted a long-term project for water supply and better drainage system for the future population growth, with the assistance of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency. The YCDC has designated 10 zones with water supply for the population growth expected by 2040.

Currently, the YCDC can distribute 205 million gallon of water to 60 per cent of population daily. We have reached an agreement with Irrigation Department to implement the Lagonpyin dam project that can distribute about 40 million gallons of water a day. The project is located near Thonegwa Village in South Dagon Township. The project that started on 14 May 2013 has been 98 per cen completed. In 2020, it will distribute 10 million gallons of water to Thilawa Special Economic Zone and the remaining 30 million gallon to four Dagon Myothit Townships, industrial zones, Thaketa and Dawbone Townships.

In addition, the YCDC has drafted a plan to supply 240 million gallons of water a day from Kukkowa River with the JICA’s loan.
