KFC Seeks Second Serving in Myanmar With Mandalay Expansion

YANGON — U.S. chicken chain KFC will bring its sizzle to a second city in Myanmar, adding Mandalay to its 12 locations here as fast-food culture spreads, especially among the nation’s young people.

KFC, operated in Myanmar by the conglomerate Yoma Strategic Holdings, will launch the Mandalay outpost in June or July. That location is among roughly 10 new stores planned for 2017, Yoma CEO Melvyn Pun told The Nikkei.

Yoma dove into the fast-food market in 2015 with its first KFC store in central Yangon, Myanmar’s biggest city. A set meal goes for around 4,000 kyat ($2.95), a little on the pricey side for the average consumer. But the eateries can use locally sourced chicken, keeping costs low compared with competitors, Pun said.

Other foreign-owned fast-food chains have entered Myanmar in recent years, including South Korea’s Lotteria in 2013, Japan’s Freshness Burger in 2014 and Burger King of the U.S. last year.
