Actions will be taken against those who sell state-owned land in accordance with the law, said Yangon Region Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein at a press conference on the regional government’s first in office on June 9.
“We face situations in which businessmen and land price manipulators buy land when there is a government project. Now we can control it to a certain extent. We see an increasing number of squatters on either side of the main road into Yangon. I heard the news that it will become a town when the government implements new town projects in the future. I would like to say that this will never happen. Only the government will implement town plans, and it will be done systematically in accordance with the law, bylaws, and procedures,” he added.
The chief minister said the regional government will compensate owners for confiscated farmland in line with the current value of the land.
“Yangon has faced many land price manipulations by entrepreneurs, manipulators, and brokers. The previous government gave the green light to three companies to implement the Yangon new town project. The current government revoked the tender after discussing it with the tender-winning companies. Now, the current government will supervise the project. For that, the regional government has to equalise land prices to a moderate extent,” he added.
