Hotels Slash Prices Online as Part of Monsoon Season Promotion

Travellers and bargain hunters will fare well this monsoon season after more than 30 hotels around the country have announced they will slash prices as part of a promotion scheme by online hotel booking site Jovago.

The promotion, which runs up until July 30, sees hotels offering discounts of 7 to 72 percent in a bid to lure customers in the midst of the country’s tourist low season.

“The promotion plan is attractive for visitors in monsoon season. With more than 30 hotels offering discounts I think customers will enjoy our promotional package,” Mr Frans Maas, Managing Director of Jovago Myanmar, said.

The promotion covers hotels in most of the country’s tourist hotspots including Chaung Thar, Ngwe Saung and Ngapali beaches, Bagan, Hpa- Ann, and Kalaw.

The Ministry of Hotels and Tourism launched its own “Green season” tour programme this month which sees selected hotels in Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan and Inle offering 35 percent discounts on rooms.

Tourism officials and businesses are emphasising the fact that crowds are lighter and that popular tourist spots like Bagan are less hot during the rainy season.

The relatively high price of accommodation in Myanmar compared to nearby countries like Thailand is a common grievance among travellers.

“The period between June to September is rainy season in Myanmar but in western countries, that is summer vacation,” U Aung Myo Min Din, Chairman of Myanmar Hoteliers Association, said.

“That is a good time to attract tourists.”
