Firms being selected for Yangon rail loop upgrade

Myanma Railways says it is selecting the firm to upgrade Yangon circular train system in the dry season.

An anonymous source said: “The project is planned for about two years now with a loan from Japan. There will be three parts in the plan. First we will install a new signal system and the second is to buy new carriages.

“Then tracks, bridges, platforms and drains will be repaired. We divided into east and west halves. We invited two bids for the each half and we are now inspecting them,” the rail source said.

The east part of the track will be from Mingaladon to Pazundaung and west half from Yangon Bayarlan to Danyinkone.

“The upgrading is expected to be finished this financial year. We will make a single-track link between two train stations in some parts. We have plans about which part of railway will be single-track and double-track. We will make sure trains are running while we upgrade,” he said.

Ten companies applied for each part of the loop. The selection process is using Japanese expertise.

“We will try not to reduce the number of commuters. We will run more trains to downtown in the morning and to the suburbs in the evening rush hour,” the source said.
