Ministry Launches Mobile App For Crop & Consumer Safety

The Plant Protection Division under Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation has recently introduced a mobile application to promote the effective and safe usage of pesticides on agricultural products.

The application, “Plant Protection Mobile Application” (PP-Verion-1.0), is available on android phones will be upgraded as frequently as the app requires.

Since launching just two months ago, the mobile application has been downloaded more than 10,000 times.

The application allows users to cross reference any brand of pesticides to see if it has been registered with the Ministry and is in fact safe to use.

“A lack of education on the safe usage of pesticides and language barriers on labels make cultivators susceptible to counterfeit brands, misusing products, and incorrectly measuring portions. It is very important to educate farmers on consumer safety and better equip them to distinguish between authentic and counterfeit chemicals,” chairman of Myanmar Fertilizer, Seed and Pesticides Entrepreneurs Association, Daw Khin Myo Khaing, said.

Daw Khin Myo Khaing urged the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation to create short, educational videos for pesticide usage to be broadcasted on the app or in local media.

The application further displays information about and links to websites for disease protection, description of safe usage, 25 varieties of crops, 30 types of upland and lowland plants, types of rodents, diseases common to agriculturists, 187 of known insects and the best methods for managing pests.

The free mobile application can be downloaded through www.ppdmy and can copy from agriculture departments across the nation.
