YCDC to fix pedestrian crossings at markets, schools

The Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) is to repair pedestrian traffic signals and repaint pedestrian lanes in front of markets and schools, Yangon Mayor U Maung Maung Soe said.

He said some traffic signals, especially along the markets and schools are not function properly or damaged, worsening the traffic congestion, especially during rush hours, and endangering people’s lives.

‘’As we know, the traffic lights overlapped in some places and in some areas did not work well,” he told the Yangon Regional Parliament on Tuesday. “It’s not effective in helping the drivers and easing traffic congestion.”

“So the company needs to fix these broken traffic lights quickly. We already warned the company to fix these traffic lights as soon as possible. If not, we will hold them responsible for that,” he added.

MP U Khin Maung Win from Pazundaung Township asked the parliament about the government’s plan to repaint faded pedestrian crossing lanes and fix broken pedestrian traffic signals in front of schools and markets where many cars ply and cause congestion.

‘’In my township, in front of Pazundaung market, it is too crowded and the bus stop is also situated near market,” he said. “During the last six months, one pedestrian died due to car accident.”

“For the sake of safety of the people and the motorists, the government should fix pedestrian traffic signals and also paint pedestrian crossing clearly, not only for Pazundaung township but also for other townships,” U Khin Maung Win said.

Myanmar Shwe Ying Company has been selected to implement a project that included building traffic control center and upgrading Yangon’s traffic lights with CCTV cameras since 2016. The company is implementing the project in cooperation with China Railway Construction Company (CRCC).

According to the procedure, the tender winning company must fix damaged traffic signals with new one within three years and give five years free service.

The project stipulated that 154 of 192 traffic lights in Yangon will be fitted with CCTV cameras which are linked to the center situated in People’s Square.

But the drivers are still facing difficulties because there were two traffic lights in some places, confusing the drivers.

Lately YCDC fixed pedestrian traffic signals in some junctions where the pedestrian and vehicles are crowded.
