Yangon CM urges businesses to help rebuild Rakhine

Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein has called on the business community to rehabilitate the trouble-prone Rakhine State’s economy, which is under international scrutiny due to unrest.
During his address to the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chamber and Commerce (UMFCCI) members on October 7, he told business owners to cooperate to help the state.

“The Rakhine State needs to be rebuild in every sector and its economy is a vital sector. I requested them to support in whatever way they can,” U Phyo Min Thin told The Myanmar Times when contacted by phone Saturday.

The state has received bad press in recent weeks after the August 25 terror attacks on government security forces and a retaliation that witnessed some 500,000 people fleeing to neighbouring Bangladesh.

Although the chief minister did not outline specifically what kind of assistance is needed to develop the state, he mentioned economy as a key area that needs urgent attention.

“He just met with the business people and requested support for Rakhine State but didn’t mention what kind of support is exactly needed. But he took suggestions from business people about the rehabilitation process of Rakhine State,” said Dr Mg Mg Lay, vice president of UMFCCI.

“This is good since as person in authority from the government met with the business sector and discussed about problems facing us,” he said.

In the final report of the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State, chaired by Koffi Annan and released last August, among other suggestions, it urged the Myanmar government to continue to “invest heavily in infrastructure, including roads, waterways, jetties, electricity, drinking water and internet provision.

In addition, to boost tourism, the government should ensure that the planned airport in Mrauk U is constructed, said the report.

In order to increase productivity, the government should expand extension services to farmers, including mechanisation, provision of quality seeds, and training in modern agricultural techniques.
