Institute for Higher Education Development to be Set up

The government plans to establish a National Institute for Higher Education Development to better manage and administer higher education, a senior education official told the parliament on Tuesday.

U Nyi Hla Nge, vice chair of the National Education Policy Commission, which is tasked with recommending reforms in the education sector, made the remark when he submitted a six-month report of the commission’s performance and achievements to the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw.

“Research and management were found to be weak among the country’s education institutions,” U Nyi Hla Nge said.

He said the commission recommended to the education ministry that it should focus on three policies. These are giving priority to remote areas which have fewer rights to education, promoting education rights of the children from poor families and supporting education opportunities of the disabled children. The recommendations have been sent to the ministry.

“After drafting the three policies, exam-oriented system in the basic schools can be changed into evaluation system which supports students’ learning capability.” he added.

The commission also presented to the Hluttaw its study on the advantages and disadvantages of each university, noting the students can greatly benefit if they can learn information and communication technology skills effectively.

The report also noted that during the past six months Myanmar universities signed partnership agreements with 24 international universities and educational institutions, which can boost learning of students in the country.

The report also proposed that some universities be allowed to offer open master departments in order to produce more qualified teachers.
