TOKYO — Japanese trading house Marubeni will upgrade a natural-gas-fired power plant in Myanmar, aiming to strengthen its power-related business on expectations of growing electricity demand in emerging Asia.
The roughly 2.5 billion yen ($21.9 million) order will be financed with a low-interest loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
Wholly owned subsidiary Marubeni Power Systems will renovate the combined-cycle plant operated by a public utility in Yangon’s Thaketa. Gas turbines will be replaced with the latest equipment, for example, raising output from 24,000kW to 66,000kW.
The new parts will be procured from Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems. Construction is targeted to begin in fiscal 2018, with operation set to start in fiscal 2019.
Marubeni has experience working on conventional power plant construction and related projects in Myanmar.
