Yangon University’s Hlaing campus to reopen on December 4

Yangon – Authorities are renovating Hlaing campus of Yangon University in preparation for re-opening it on December 4, nearly two decades after it was closed, according to sources.

The Hlain campus will open to the large number of first year arts and science students attending Yangon University.

Pho Kaung, rector of Yangon University confirmed that first-year students will return to the long-closed campus. But, he said, “they will attend their final year on the main campus. We are preparing dorms for them.”

The campus was being used for students from Practicing High School, Yangon Institute of Education (TTC). School authorities are preparing to move them back to the TTC on Pyay Road on November 23.

Meanwhile, workers are renovating, painting and performing other repair works.

The campus, officially named Regional College 2, was previously known as RC 2 among students before the name was changed to “Yangon University (Hlaing campus)” in 1981.

In 1996-97 academic year, the government closed down the campus and transferred it to the TTC.

The buildings in the campus were built by the former Soviet Union using orange coloured glazed bricks, giving rise to the nickname of “Orange College” at that time, said former Myanmar international footballer Zaw Myint.

After more than 20 years since closure, “we are glad that it will be reopened,” said Zaw Myint.

“Changing the campus into a high school made the old university students very sad.”

He continued: “Some students said they are happy to attend a university with Dalbergia Kurzii trees, convocation hall and Adapati street. However, it makes them miserable to attend in Hlaing campus. We feel sympathy for them. There are gold mohur trees, rain trees and Inya Lake. I want to suggest they attend it and they can feel a happy moment in the life of a university student. I welcome them.”
