Yangon Seeks to Upgrade its Ports

Yangon Region Government Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein said that his government was trying to upgrade the existing ports in Yangon and building new ones for the development of trade.

He said at the meeting with businessmen and the Vice-President on November 24 that they were doing this works as Myanmar had good opportunities if the flow of goods from China could be diverted from current South China Sea route to the Gulf of Martaban.

“Yangon Region Government is trying to upgrade existing ports and to build new ports. We are coordinating with Union Ministries for this work,” Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein said.

He added that the capability of mooring large vessels, natural disasters and high sea waves would be taken into consideration in the building of these new ports.

Moreover, studies are being made to look into shifting the ports to the mouth of the Yangon River. The region government will take the recommendations of companies and organizations which are adept in international maritime business and technology in doing this work.
