Feasibility studies have been conducted for extending Yangon jetty to the mouth of the sea to be able to dock large ships, said Yangon’s Chief Minister at a November 12 ceremony during a regular meeting of businessmen and women with Vice President (1) Myint Swe held at the UMFCCI.
“These ports were built in the colonial era and there is evidence that some ports were relocated. As the river changes, it affected the ports and Yangon port was moved to Thilawa,” said Yangon Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein.
Extension work will continue, starting with feasibility studies now underway, he said.
After the surveys are done and with approval from international maritime experts and organizations, relocation will be carried out, he continued.
Myanmar does not produce many things, the chief minister said, but there is potential for China to ship commodities through Myanmar’s ports. However, without an increase in commodities to ship, the overhead costs of a big seaport are prohibitive over the long term.
Phyo Min Thein pointed to Thilawa as an example of a port that survived hardships.
When building ports, it is important to consider potential natural disasters and the effects of waves, he added.
There are nine ports in Myanmar. Yangon port is handling 90 percent of commodities moved by ship, and so has a strong business case
